Buddhas

The Buddhas were the inspiration for me to start painting again when I found myself without a job in 2020.  I have been practicing and studying Buddhism since my early 20’s. These images represent some of the Buddhist principals that I have found helpful in navigating my way through life. One of these principals is that nothing exists in and of itself. Everything exists in dependence upon other things. Subject is not separate from object. Foreground is not separate from background. The images are created by spreading thin layers of acrylic paint over a gelatin plate and then imprinting the paint with various textures and designs. In most of the images, the Buddha is not actually painted onto the paper. It is revealed by blocking off everything else. I use the gelatin plate and a mask in the shape of a Buddha to do this. So the buddha image appears as a manifestation of it’s environment, not separate from it.
